Here you will find a series of descriptive handouts that challenge students to do the following in-class assignments:
Brainstorm about America based on a list of diverse and eclectic statistics.
Read and analyze four poems about America by a range of classic and contemporary poets (Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Jimmy Santiago Baca, Mohja Kahf). Use the poems to engage students in a critical discussion about history, culture, stereotypes, race, and diversity in America.
Practice using abstract and concrete language in writing through a Do-Now exercise.
Complete an "America Poem - Work-Up" (a brainstorm sheet) that prepares students to write their own poem about America in their voice.
Compose a non-cliched creative poem, using concrete language and imagery about America.
Perform the poem using performance guidelines outlined in a student-friendly rubric.
