2) A document-based activity that is based around one of the most famous events of the civil rights movement: the Montgomery Bus Boycott. First, students will answer questions that help them identify key civil rights events of the 1950's. This will help test them on background information that will help them with their general knowledge of the content. Following this, they will read three primary source documents about the Montgomery Bus Boycott. These sources are letters and diary entires from individuals involved with the demonstration Students will answer questions that will help them understand the documents and the boycott in a deeper way.
This activity can be used in many different ways in the classroom. Students can work independently, in pairs or this activity can be used as a jigsaw in order to facilitate a class wide discussion about the topics discussed in the activity.
