Fifth Grade students will flip over this textbook scavenger hunt as they work collaboratively discovering the contents of their Social Studies textbook. The scavenger hunt correlates with the Houghton Mifflin series: United States History Early Years, copyright 2005, but can be adapted for your own series. This engaging lesson provides a meaningful springboard activity for your first textbook lesson as it familiarizes students with the organization of this valuable resource. In addition, this lesson prepares students for future interactive notebook lessons where listening, organizing, and cutting and pasting are key.
Upon completion of the scavenger hunt, students illustrate the lyrics to "America the Beautiful" while listening to the song using a resource of your choice. This two day lesson introduces vocabulary and content such as land forms, geography, plains, and mountains before you even teach the first textbook lesson!
