A Harkness Table is a student-led round table discussion that answers an essential question on a particular topic. This Harkness Table is about the American Civil Rights Movement and answers the question "To what extent did the American Civil Rights Movement secure equal rights for African-Americans?". The beauty of this activity is that there is no right or wrong answer and the responses to that question can be from across the spectrum.
In this activity, there are several events that the students must thoroughly discuss in response to their question. You will receive a teacher instruction sheet and all sheets students need to prepare for the Harkness Table, including directions, list of Civil Rights events, note-taking graphic organizer, page for specific quotes, page for general notes, and 3 different rubrics (all are used, but in different ways).
If you have never done a Harkness Table, you are in for a treat! You will love the outcome of this fully student-centered activity.
