This is a 28 slide, highly animated, power point presentations on the American Civil War - Civil War Casualties. Each of the presentation slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.
The Civil War was America's bloodiest conflict. The unprecedented violence of battles such as Shiloh, Antietam, Stones River, and Gettysburg shocked citizens and international observers alike. Nearly as many men died in captivity during the Civil War as were killed in the whole of the Vietnam War. Hundreds of thousands died of disease.
Roughly 2% of the population, an estimated 620,000 men, lost their lives in the line of duty. Taken as a percentage of today's population, the toll would have risen as high as 6 million souls.
At the beginning of the Civil War the north had a population of 22 million people, whereas the south had a population of 9 million people of which 3.5 million were slaves. Grant understood “total war” and practiced a “scorched earth policy” at the end that left the south without the ability to support its population.
New technology was developed that enabled death to be delivered on an unprecedented scale.
