George Brinton McClellan is often remembered as the great organizer of the Union Army of the Potomac. Nicknamed "Young Napoleon," "Little Mac" was immensely popular with the men who served under his command. His military command style, however, put him at odds with President Abraham Lincoln, and would ultimately upset his military and political fortunes.
“Little Mac,” as he was affectionately called by his troops, was cautious to the point of paralysis. He relied on numbers given to him by the Pinkerton Detective Agency and whose men were acting as Union intelligence gatherers. He was poor at judging the numbers of field military.
During the peninsula campaign he was convinced that the Confederates numbered 100,000 and would offer too much resistance. In fact, the Confederates numbered only 10,000 but appearing to have greater numbers using deceptive tactics. Many believe his constant indecision cost the Union the opportunity to end the war much sooner.
