After the secession movement was completed and with the addition of new states entering both the Union and Confederates sides, the map of the country consisted of; 23 states in the Union, primarily in the North, but also including Kansas, California and Oregon with a population of over 20 million, 11 states in the Confederacy, all in the South and including Texas with a population of 9 million, including nearly 4 million slaves. The rest of the country was comprised of 8 territories that would eventually become part of a reunited United States of America.

Following the election of 1860, states began to secede from the Union to create the Confederate States of America. Unwilling to let this happen, President Lincoln refused to allow the states to secede. Not willing to be denied this right, the southern states went to war, creating what would become the American Civil War. This war became the bloodiest period in the United States, caused untold destruction with long lasting effects of American Society.

The war was fought on three theaters; the Eastern, Western, and Trans-Mississippi Theaters, with the bulk of the fighting taking place in the first two. There were fifteen battles fought in the Eastern Theater that were significant help determine the outcome of the war.

This presentation covers the major battles fought in the Eastern Theater during the American Civil War.

NOTE: This presentation should be considered as 15 separate presentations rolled into one. Each battle is summarized, the leaders are identified, there is a map of the battlefield on each and a statement as to the impact of that particular battle.
