Settlement of the American Colonies in the New World

This is a COMPLETE Centers or Response Group or Archeological Dig Activity on the Settlement of the American Colonies. This activity includes everything you need to implement the lesson in a variety of ways or to review the core content on the settlement of the Americas.

Includes EVERYTHING you need, including core standards information cards, images for digs or stations, mapping, and so much more. Also includes a complete matching game on the settlements. Student handouts are provided, and can be used as a test prep. Wrap-up questions make great lesson discussion for end of unit.

This lesson is everything you would need to cover the early settlements and to review for a unit assessment.

Resources can be used in a variety of ways. Listed below are ideas for implementation:
*Set up centers with each location set arranged with all information viewable. Cut out the images for each settlement and place them into a basket or box for students to draw and match to their labels. Direct students to take notes on the provided handouts and to answer all center/station questions.
*Use the timeline information to create a human timeline in your class from region to region. Have students pass the cards after reading each date and discuss the stages in settlement among the different regions.
*Create an archeological dig site in your classroom where students can use the identity cards to match the images they pull for the different regions. They can follow-up by analyzing the information to create a full picture of each settlement and area.
*Allow students to review the content on the settlements through the use of the matching colony sets at the end of the lesson. Teams can work together to match the sets in a competition setting.
*Use the images to allow students to create their own ideas on each colony or region before going over the information cards for review. Follow up with the matching game and class notes.
*Have students arranged in small groups and assign each group a settlement area. Each group should become experts on their region and will report to the class about their region as the others take notes.

**A Number of Handouts are provided for student use, but not all need to be used for the activities! This gives you choice for implementation and the opportunity to pick and choose what will work best for your students!
