PowerPoint Download: Constitution Day 3 - Background and Guards Against Tyranny
One or Two-Day Lesson! Choose your own pacing and culminate student learning in a THRASH OUT team debate!
[Immerse your students in one of the most relevant topics and lessons that they will ever know - the United States Constitution! In this one to two day lesson, students will dive head first into the background of the Constitution (why we needed a change from the Articles of Confederation) and examine the procedures that our government has in place to protect its citizens from tyranny. Lesson begins with a primary source warm up activity, continues with a discussion on the Articles of Confederation, then goes in-depth with notes and discussion points on the guards against tyranny provided within the Constitution. Lead your students in discussion on federalism, checks and balances, the two houses of Congress, and separation of powers! Primary source analysis is included throughout the lesson alongside critical thinking questions to guide student thought and discussion. At the end, there is a built in Thrash Out activity, similar to a mini team debate. Cooperative learning embedded throughout! Lesson ends with an Exit Card designed around student choice!
