The attached file is a week-long lesson plan designed to go with the first grade Common Core Curriculum Map Unit "American Contributions." In my progression, this would be week 2; however they do not have to be taught in this particular order. This lesson plan is a 5 day plan along with a student packet with a cover page and student activity pages. There is also a link to Brainpopjr.com if you have access to it. I have included both PDF and Word versions of each document if you would like to make changes to them.
The plans include: focus standards, vocabulary, essential questions, I can statements and technology links.
The focus standards are:
RI.1. 8. Identify the reasons an author gives to support points in a text.
RI.1.1. Ask and answer questions about key details in a text.
RI.1.3. Describe the connection between two individuals, events, ideas, or pieces of information in a text.
In these lessons students will learn about Benjamin Franklin. They will find reasons the author gives to support various points in biographies about Benjamin Franklin and also continue to learn about the American Revolution and the early history of our government. Students will also complete a timeline about Benjamin Franklin’s life.
The books I used for the lesson are (these could be changed)
“A Picture Book of Benjamin Franklin” by David A. Adler
The Hatmaker’s Sign: A Story by Benjamin Franklin retold by Candace Fleming
“Rookie Biographies: Benjamin Franklin” by Wil Mara *I have the revised edition and am not sure how it differs from the original.
