Each year I teach a unit on Themes in American Stories. We explore the varieties of culture evident in America. While doing this, we talk about oral traditions, cultures, themes, and heroes. A great visual example of the immigrant story is "The American Tale." We also read several selections from our textbook which coincide (including a short piece by Zora Neale Hurston, "Davy Crockett's Dream," and a few native American stories). This questionnaire includes questions about the use of oral tradition, the importance of culture, and the symbols in the film, "The American Tale." It's a great extended activity to do with a class, and a way to show a film without being "that teacher who just shows movies on Fridays."
