This all-inclusive packet is designed to integrate Social Studies into your Reading instruction as you teach the American heroes. There are over 120 pages of student resources included.
The packet can be used as a whole-group lesson or small-group instruction. For each hero there is a biography that can be used as a close-read passage, questions of various DOK levels, a sequencing activity, a cause and effect activity, and a writing prompt. The writing prompts for the different American heroes cover narrative, informational, and opinion genres. Each biography has a Lexile level designed for repeated reading through explicit instruction. The corresponding activities can be used as independent work or small group activities.
*Paul Revere, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Mary McLeod Bethune, Franklin Roosevelt, Eleanor Roosevelt, Lyndon B. Johnson, Thurgood Marshall, Cesar Chavez
The packet can be used to assess:
*Close Reading Skills
*Reading Informational Skills
*Text Structure Strategies
*Social Studies Concepts
*Writing Skills (narrative, informational, and opinion)
In addition to the packet is a review pack, including mini-posters that feature the themes of each hero, extended writing tasks, timelines, and fact charts for each hero.
Whether you spend a week on a hero, or longer, this mega bundle can be a valuable tool for your instruction. Ideally, you would begin with the biography as a close read and expose your students to the text multiple times. While reading, you could discuss the vocabulary words in the text, search for main ideas and details, and use context clues for new words. Then students would use the text as a basis for answering comprehension questions. The questions ask students to use text evidence to support their answers. Following the questions, students would engage in sequencing and cause and effect activities that encourage students to use the text to find their answers. Each hero study wraps up with a writing prompt.
Then use the review pack to assess student learning of each hero!
This bundle is designed to evoke higher-order thinking from your third graders as they build literacy skills through text evidence.
