American History Poetry Word Magnet Templates

If you use centers or early finisher activities, try these poetry/word magnets! Use these American History unit words with a basic word set (download here for free) to create an integrated social studies and language arts activity.

Included are seven units. Each unit has two pages of words, except for Colonial America which has 3 pages. The units included are:

- U.S. Geography
- Native Americans
- Age of Exploration
- Colonial America
- American Revolution / Revolutionary War
- U.S. Government & Civics
- Westward Expansion (pre-1860)

These magnets are simple to make and easy to use!
Students could use the magnets as:
- a word sort for each history unit.
- an integrated poetry activity.
- vocabulary practice.
- prewriting for nonfiction essays.
- an accommodation for students with fine motor difficulties.
- a history center activity - students could work in partners to group related words and/or write sentences.

The unit words plus the basic set are enough for 2 - 4 students to share.

Print each unit on a different color paper in order to easily identify the unit words when switching units.

The magnets are easy to make. Simply print these templates on printer paper, then adhere to an adhesive magnetic sheet. Just peel the backing off the sheet, add the page of words, then cut!

Many cookie sheets are magnetic and can be used as student work "mats" - I found some at the local Dollar store. (Just test them with a magnet to make sure they are magnetic.) Teachers can also make magnetic boards with thin plywood and magnetic paint.

For more information, read my blog post on how to make and use the poetry word magnets.
