This is a two page reading on American imperialism in China and Japan. The lexile level is 1100 - 1200. The reading addresses Perry's interaction with the Japanese and the Treaty of Kanagawa, as well as the European spheres of influence in China, the Open Door Policy, and the Boxer Rebellion. Students are encouraged to read and annotate the article before completing the "Read for Meaning" sheet provided. The handout includes three statements that students need to identify as true or false based upon their reading, and then draw a conclusion about American imperialism of that period.
