Students master United States history content while completing the Common Core English Language Arts and Literacy Standards for History. The history content for this lesson examines the factors influencing the American colonists in their bid for independence from Britain. Students will gain both reading and writing skills. Reading skills include analyzing primary sources, determining central ideas, understanding history specific terms, examining the method of text organization, integrating visual information, and analyzing the relationship between primary and secondary sources on the same subject. Writing skills include writing informative and explanatory texts, introducing a topic, developing a topic, using precise language, writing clearly, gathering information, and finding evidence to support an answer. Historical topics include the Great Awakening, the Declaration of Independence, American Revolution, Inalienable Rights, and Constitutional Democracy. Information is presented in a variety of formats--text, graphic organizers, charts, and quotations.
