Product Description
Are you looking for a bell ringer replacement for daily sentence corrections specific to American Literature? Perhaps one that will translate into improved student writing? If so, this resource fits your needs. Based on Jeff Anderson’s idea of using “mentor texts” and “mentor sentences” presented in Mechanically Inclined, this resource is a compilation of 24 sentences matched to the following 8 categories:
Comma after an Introductory Element
Commas to Set off Nonessential Information
Comma Setting Off Additions at the End of the Sentence
Commas in a Series
Adjective Clauses
Revealing Character-Tagging Dialogue with Action
The Dash
The Hyphen

Not only am I providing you with the master list of sentences and their page numbers by category from the mentor texts The Great Gatsby (1925), The Things They Carried (1990), and Their Eyes Were Watching God (1937), but I have also included the master power point for you to use daily with your mentor sentences. Each slide displays the category, the mentor sentence highlighting the key pattern or rule within the sentence, and the step for students to follow on that day: 5 steps for 5 days of meaningful bell work or mini-lessons, resulting in student revision of their writing on day 4 for each mentor sentence you use. You may choose to use all three mentor sentences per category (3 weeks of bell ringers or mini-lessons) before moving to another category, select problematic categories that you have identified in your students’ writing to target, or use one sentence in each category before starting round two! The daily steps are merely recommended daily directions that I have already outlined for your students, but I encourage you to make this process your own!
