This packet contains readings from each time period in American history, beginning with the Explorers and Puritans and ending with the Modern era.
Readings include the following: The Interesting Narrative of Olaudah Equiano, The General History of Virginia (john Smith), The Autobiography of Benjamin Franklin, The Speech in the Virginia Convention (Patrick Henry), The Devil and Tom Walker (Washington Irving), The Minister's Black Veil (Nathaniel Hawthorne), poems by the Fireside Poets, poems by Emily Dickinson, poems by Robinson and Masters, The Notorious Jumping Frog (Mark Twain), Dust Tracks (Zora Neale Hurston) and poems from the Harlem Renaissance.
In my store is a multiple choice test to be used as a final exam. It includes skills-based readings as well as reading comprehension questions.
I use this packet as summer reading to introduce each of the literary time periods in American Literature. I add online questions that students answer after each passage that are submitted through an online LMS, such as Canvas. I ask the same questions that are posed in the test.
