Using these quizzes as my primary teaching tool, over 50% of my class passed the US History AP test. (For reference, my school does not separate courses into standard, honors, and AP. It is mandatory that all students take AP courses.)
I broke down the entire American Pageant textbook into 10-15 page readings, to be assigned to students daily. At this rate, the textbook will be covered about a month before the AP test. Each reading has a 6 or 12 question quiz, which I wrote, that tests both comprehension and critical thinking. Additionally, this document also contains quizzes from additional readings, particularly from Howard Zinn's "A People's History of the United States," which I paired with American Pageant.
These quizzes are designed for an AP level course, but they can be easily modified for a lower level course. The quizzes are an excellent way to ensure that students read at a college level, as my questions are designed to elicit college-level thinking.
The quizzes are meant to be administered orally, and so the answers appear immediately after the questions in parenthesis. They can also be copied/pasted into a powerpoint and projected. Printing daily quizzes is wasteful, so I don't recommend it. I have students respond on half sheets of paper in order to conserve. There will be typos in the document, but nothing that prevents you from understanding the meaning.
This is a large file that represents scores of hours of labor on my part. Although this product may seem expensive, bear in mind that it is an entire year's worth of work for both myself and my students, and will save you a tremendous amount of time.
