This lesson plan allows students to take the role of George Washington and his generals during the Siege of Boston in late February 1776 as they plan to liberate Boston in early March. This is a fun way for students to learn about leadership and the choices George Washington had to make during the American Revolution. The less your students know about the Siege of Boston before doing this lesson plan the better.
The lesson plan can be used in a variety of ways and is Word and PowerPoint so it can be modified by you to fit the skill level and needs of your students. The map of Boston can be projected for students to see through the PowerPoint or you can print out a map for each group to look at. I included the link to the map at the Boston Library below.
I have been doing this lesson for almost ten years and my students enjoy it and remember stresses of being a general and the wisdom of George Washington at Boston because of it.
The students basically have three choices related to the Siege of Boston:
1. A frontal assault on Boston through the Boston Neck.
2. An amphibious assault on Boston.
3. Siege of Boston (This what George Washington chose in real life)
This lesson plan will take anywhere between 30 to 50 minutes depending on the discussions with your students. Four roles will be included for each group, but groups can be smaller if needed. Everything you need is included in the file. As the teacher make sure you look at the map of Boston ahead of time and print out roles for each group. Each George Washington must listen to the generals in his or her group and make the best decision to attack Boston and drive out the British. The generals must study the map and explain to General Washington why their plan is best. The group must come to a final decision about Boston, but George Washington has the final say on what the Continental army does at Boston.
