Product Description
Resource includes three primary sources related to the American Revolution: "Common Sense," by Thomas Paine, "Declaration and Resolves of the First Continental Congress," and a political cartoon. The first two sources have a modern English version next to the original text to help struggling readers make sense of the complex language. Included is an assignment that has students read with a purpose: which is to find in the primary sources examples of what the colonists wanted. The categories students have to find in the text are, "No taxation without representation," "the rights of free people," "the right to run their own trade," and "self-government." A sample graphic organizer is filled out using Common Sense. Also included is the original lesson plan.
