During the American Revolution, the Continental Army struggled with supplies. This made it difficult to keep up with a top notch British militia. In this stem activity, students will work in teams to create a catapult that will launch supplies over British territory and safely into the Patriot camp. Students will design their prototype, 'purchase' supplies using a strict budget, create the catapult, and then put it to the test to see if they can get the Patriots the supplies they need.
Afterwards, students will go back with their team for reflection and have an opportunity to improve their design before trying one last time to complete the mission.
This packet includes all necessary handouts and data tracking sheets to complete the activity. You can expand upon it by having the students graph their data. It was designed to meet the Engineering and Design science standards while also helping students to remember that the Continental Army was not set up for success against a well trained British Army.
