This lesson plan allows students to take the role of George Washington before the Battle of Trenton. The less your students know about the Battle of Trenton and the Crossing of the Delaware River before doing this lesson plan the better.
The lesson plan can be used in a variety of ways and is in Word and PowerPoint so it can be modified by you to fit the skill level and needs of your students. The lesson plan can be as simple as a “Do now” or can take an entire class period with discussion and an extension activity. The choice is yours! I have been doing this lesson for almost ten years and my students enjoy it and remember the Battle of Trenton because of it.
The students have three choices related to the Battle of Trenton:
Dig in and defend
Cross the Delaware River and attack
The lesson plan can be done individually or by students in small groups. You can project the PowerPoint slides to the class or you can print out slides 2-7 for the class to analyze in groups.
After the students make their choice, led a discussion about the pros and cons of their choices and reveal to them that George Washington crossed the Delaware River and decided to attack. Students will understand the difficulties and risk of George Washington’s decision.
You can also extend this activity by playing the following video about the Battle of Trenton for your students:
