Who fired the famous "Shot Heard 'Round the World" at Lexington, which launched the American Revolutionary War? Frustrated British soldiers, or defiant American colonists? In this activity, students analyze 6 primary and secondary sources for content and reliability in order to determine their own opinion of who fired first. As they read each source, they complete an organizer, which helps them prepare for the written response. If you would like to save time for yourself and your students, you could easily skip the essay and it would still be a valuable activity and good for class discussion/debate.
Students would benefit from a little context about the lead up to this moment at Lexington. I suggest using my "American Revolution: Lexington and Concord & Paul Revere's Midnight Ride" for the best intro. For a shorter and quicker take on several events leading to this moment, I suggest my "American Revolution: Boston Tea Party to Paul Revere's Ride".
