What would have happened if the Americans LOST the Revolution? Each leader would have faced a trial for treason against the British Crown.
Overview: This assignment is for my AP US History classes and Dual Enrollment US History classes in 11th grade, though it could be used for any level. The assignment has two parts. First, a research paper where students will choose one of the Founding Fathers listed below and write a short paper with MLA citations. Second, student have the opportunity to earn extra credit on their paper through a trial. All students will participate in a trial either as a defense attorney, Founding Father or a prosecutor. If the student wins the trial, they can earn extra credit for their research paper of up to 5 points.
MY REAL GOAL OF THE PAPER: The paper has 2 goals I want to achieve. 1- Getting students used to answering the QUESTION ASKED. There are five specific questions concerning the Founding Father they choose that must be address in their paper. The degree to which they answered them is the bulk of their grade. 2- CITING SOURCES- As this is a college level course, they need to become used to citing their sources. My students will write 3-4 research papers a year. The final paper is a 5 page paper that requires MLA citations so the goal of this is to teach students how to cite sources and make them comfortable with the process.
TIME: Students will have approx. 2 weeks to research and write the paper. Since it is a minimum length of 2 pages and has very specific questions the students must address, two weeks is plenty of time to research their person and write the paper.
(NOTE: My school is a block scheduled school. Class meets every other day for 1.5 hours.)
