This is a 15 slide, highly animated, power point presentation on The American Revolutionary War - The Battle of Monmouth Courthouse. All of the slides are editable so you can modify the slides if you need to.
With the French entry into the war, British strategy in America began to shift. Having captured the rebel capital of Philadelphia in 1777, the British decided to abandon the city the following spring to focus on protecting their base at NYC. General Clinton, who decided to shift the main body of his troops from Philadelphia to a point nearer the coast, ordered the evacuation of the 10,000-man garrison in Philadelphia on June 18.
As these troops set out through NJ toward NY, Washington broke camp at his winter headquarters in Valley Forge, and began pursuit of Clinton with an army of about 13,500 men. The training and discipline instilled by von Steuben at Valley Forge paid dividends as the Continental troops were able to fight the British regulars to a standstill.
The battle was the last major engagement fought in the northern theater of the war, as the British holed up in NY and shifted their attention to the southern colonies.
