The British campaign to seize Philadelphia, the capital of the newly formed nation, began in late July 1777. 15,000 troops under Howe's command landed at Elkton, MD, on August 25th. Washington, with about 11,000 men, took up a defensive position blocking the way to Philadelphia at Chad's Ford on the eastern side of Brandywine Creek in PA. Howe attacked with Cornwallis on September 11th, while his Hessian troops attacked opposite Chad's Ford.

Major General Nathanael Greene's troops staved off Cornwallis' threatened envelopment of Washington's whole force, and the Americans fell back to Chester in a hard-pressed but orderly retreat.
The Battle of Brandywine cost Washington around 1,000 killed, wounded, and captured as well as most of his artillery, while British losses were 93 killed, 488 wounded, and 6 missing. Among the American wounded was the newly arrived Marquis de Lafayette.

Retreating from Brandywine, Washington's army fell back on Chester feeling that it had merely lost a battle and desiring another fight. The impending loss of Philadelphia hurt the patriot cause, and Washington's force had dropped from a high of nearly 15,000 prior to the battle to only 6,000.

The Americans were ultimately defeated not the result of poor fighting but because of unfamiliarity with the landscape and poor local intelligence.
