This is a 17 slide, highly animated, power point presentation on the American Revolutionary War - Savannah Campaign. Each of the slides are editable so you can change it to fit your individual needs.
There were two battles fought at Savannah, GA, during the American Revolutionary War. In the 1st battle, a British expeditionary force that had landed on the Savannah River below the town overwhelmed and outmaneuvered the American defending force under General Robert Howe, and Savannah was captured. In the 2nd battle, the following year Valerie D'Estaing's French fleet returned from the West Indies to the southern coast and began to debark troops at Beaulieu, 14 miles south of Savannah, with the intention of retaking the city for the Americans.
Lincoln, recently appointed Southern commander of the Continental Army, realized that the loss of Savannah was key and set out to regain the coastal GA port. It was the belief of the American commanders that the British forces would surrender if their escape routes were cut.
The British, believing the French fleet to be occupied in the Caribbean, were taken by surprise. With a garrison of about 700, Savannah was ripe for the taking but the allies waited, delaying an assault. At dawn, thousands of French and Americans attacked the British positions and were cut down. It was the bloodiest hour in the American Revolutionary War.
The British easily captured Savannah from the Americans setting the stage for the 2nd bloodiest battle of the Revolution.
The presentation covers the following:
