The British followed up their success on Long Island with a series of landings on Manhattan Island which compelled Washington to retire northward to avoid entrapment. When Fort Washington and Fort Lee on the Hudson above Manhattan were lost in mid-November 1776, Washington faced a crisis as his battered army began to disintegrate through desertions and expiring enlistments.
Washington retreated across NJ with General Howe in close pursuit, escaping over the Delaware river into PA with about 3,000 men. As they retreated, he made camp and attempted to reinvigorate his shrinking command. Combating rain, sleet, and snow, Washington's army reached the Delaware river where he made his famous crossing on Christmas night. Surprising the Hessians, Washington delivered a significant victory for the Americans.
Though a minor engagement relative to the size of the forces involved, the victory at Trenton had a massive effect on the colonial war effort. Instilling a new confidence in the army and the Continental Congress, the triumph at Trenton bolstered public morale and increased enlistments.
