This is a 24 slide, highly animated, power point presentation on the American Revolutionary War – Timothy Murphy, Sniper. Each of the slides are editable so you can modify the slides to the presentation as needed.
The Colonial Army adopted the tactic of “sniping” early in the American Revolutionary War. British officers had the habit of keeping their written orders on their person and did not share those orders down the chain of command. When the Americans realized that by selectively shooting British officers on the battlefield it completely compromised the chain of command and created mayhem in their ranks.
They recruited “expert marksmen” for this task. “Expert marksmen” (snipers) were shooters who could consistently hit a 7-inch target at 250 yards using a Pennsylvania Long Rifle. One such “expert” was a man named Timothy Murphy. Murphy, was a Revolutionary War hero who served with distinction on the frontier, and later with famed General Daniel Morgan as a rifleman. Although over time, Murphy has diminished his fame, he was the most famous marksman of his day.
He is best known for assassinating Generals Fraser and Clark and the orders of Benedict Arnold during the Battle of Saratoga and almost killing General Bourgogne, who barely escaped. This American victory turned the fortunes for the Americans and convinced the French to enter the war on the side of the Americans.
Timothy Murphy played a major role in numerous battles and skirmishes throughout the Revolutionary war, finally receiving honors for his heroism by Governor Franklin Roosevelt while governor of New York.
