Product Description
This product was developed as a supplement for teaching deaf and hard of hearing students using the Reading Milestones (c) reading curriculum. You do not HAVE TO use this curriculum to use this product but the sequence of vocabulary introduction matches the curriculum.

Also, you will notice that the vocabulary is written in a way that introduces English in a very structured way. The verbs used at this point in the program are in present progressive form. This structure allows students to create grammatically correct sentences early on.

Important note about the differences between ASL and English. The signs provided are static. However, in signed language, the signs change according to context. It is important that the students are able to differentiate signs according to context. The signs provided are just one representation of the English context.

Included in this product

Print, Cut and Laminate
These cards can be used for independent practice.
Students use dry erase markers to spell each word.

Word Wall Cards
Print, Cut, Laminate
These are the anchor cards that include the English word, the sign, and the picture representation.
These cards at regular size can be used to add to the classroom word wall.
You can also change your printer settings to print them smaller if you would prefer that. Cards can be used for students to make individual study cards as well.

Assessments
Word Assessment
Like many Deaf and Hard of Hearing classrooms, I have a multiage group of students working at the same level. Students are able be assessed using the format they are most comfortable with.
Student sets
large words in boxes
or
words in a columns
or
Word strips (Print, Cut and Laminate) - students choose a word strip from a basket. I have the students read me the number on the strip so I can track them accordingly. Students read the words on the strip.
Teacher tracking pages.
Score the student
Sentence Assessment
Sentence assessments are set up the same way as the word assessments. These assessments track student fluency with beginning sentences.
When scoring, students must read the entire sentence and use contextually correct signs to get a point for the sentence.
Students are able to use the student assessment page or the Sentence strips. Each of the numbers on the sentences has a letter ‘s’ so that you can easily keep the word and sentence assessments separate.
