I used this PowerPoint to introduce Transcendentalism and Anti-Transcendentalism, only going to each subject as needed. For example, I went through Transcendentalism in regards to religions of the time and the different beliefs and went over a handout that separated each in an Excel sheet format. The next day we began the authors with Margaret Fuller and read a short biography, looked at a picture of her, and read a poem by her. I continued this pattern throughout the unit so I did not overwhelm my students with too much information at once.
It took me one month, give or take a few days, to complete this PowerPoint. It completely depends on how you choose to utilize it. If just given as notes all at once, I estimate you could get through this in two 45 minute class periods, assuming there are questions.
Here's a list of topics covered in the PowerPoint:
Influence of Romantic lit and Gothic lit
The Oversoul & Nature
How Transcendentalism began
Ralph Waldo Emerson (Self Reliance)
Henry David Thoreau (Walden, Civil Disobedience)
