Students will create an illustration that incorporates various aspects of American expansion west. The project is designed to mimic the John Gast painting "American Progress." The project can be used many different ways but it designed to be done in stages or layers as the unit is taught. For example, after teaching about inventions that transformed the west, the students would add that to their masterpiece. In the end the students would illustrate the evolution of the Great Plains from treeless wasteland to a prosperous region of the United States. The project also includes an optional writing component that students can use to reflect on the project and explain their illustrations.
This file includes a rubric that can be heavily modified and an outline designed to allow the students to map out their thoughts before the illustrating begins.
