This assignment is a final project for Piri Thomas' short story, "Amigo Brothers." The story is about two inner-city kids who are best friends and who both love boxing, but find out that they have to fight each other.
This project is the culmination of learning several key concepts, including: PLOT (exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution); CONFLICT; CHARACTERIZATION; SETTING (time and place of the story); and DIALOGUE.
The included graphic organizer is a great way to have students brainstorm about their comic strips and analyze the key concepts involved. I have also included a rubric to score students' final drafts. When I teach this, I have students use Bitstrips.com to build their comic strips on a digital platform; each class then votes on the best comic strip, and I score their digital comic strips with the rubric, just like I would if they were on paper. A few student samples of these are included with this product.
* NOTE: This assignment is specifically for the story "Amigo Brothers." However, it is great to use for many short stories. If you like this assignment but don't teach "Amigo Brothers," I have also uploaded a generic version, to be used with any other story.
