Product Description

Students will have fun deciding if the "mystery specimen" is living or nonliving. After reading an article full of clues, students determine if the specimen meets all characteristics of life. This activity helps students learn:

  • All living things are made up of cells.
  • All living things carry out life processes.
  • All living things can be unicellular or multi-cellular

The characteristics of life have been condensed to the top six most frequently researched: made of cells, maintains homeostasis, uses/requires energy, grows and develops, responds to stimuli (reacts to environment), and reproduces.

*The mystery substance is an amoeba :)

**My suggestion is to make sure students are exposed to the term amoeba via investigations using microscopes or other activity so they are familiar with the term prior to completing this activity.
