Common Core aligned for grades 5th-8th. Students enjoy something a little different than the norm, plus, this novel unit gets them involved in the storyline from the viewpoint of the main character.
I used several excerpts from this novel unit with 6th graders the last week of class. These students were finishing up the last several chapters of the novel after grades were in, and knew it was supplementary material to interest them in summer reading with no grade. These awesome kids gave the materials a thumbs up, and really put their all into the work because, as they said, it was interesting and fun, plus, they could utilize their individual creativity and talents.
This novel unit is all inclusive with comprehension questions, character analyzation, vocabulary, and writing tasks. This 41 page novel unit covers nearly all common core reading, writing, and language standards. Use it in whole or in parts that suit your needs. You will need a graphic plot mountain for one of the activities, and it is a great finished product to include in a student's portfolio because they utilize their creativity for some activities. I have even made a few into books.
The standards covered are listed at the end of the unit, however, if you are a teacher outside of Florida and would like to purchase the item with Common Core Standards listed instead, this item can be found in my store.
There is a listing on TPT by Lovin Lit that I use to add another element to this novel unit by comparing the facts in the story with the population control requirements in the country of China, that, until the last few years, were in place. You can find it here https://www.teacherspayteachers.com/Product/Among-the-Hidden-vs-Real-Life-Common-Core-Activities-586318. It is a helpful tool to expand on critical thinking skills regarding non-fictional informational text and this fictional storyline.
This novel unit targets, but is not limited to, the following common core anchor standards. There are several more standards in which this novel unit will fall, but I chose to keep it less detailed using anchor standards only so our listing would be sized appropriately.
