Student are used to hearing big numbers like thousand, million and billion . 5 acres, 150 acres and even a 5000 acre dairy farm. Most of these big numbers don't relate well with students and even adults.
In this Teaching Model students take a look at the question "How big is an acre?" Using resources available and the Task Cards included they will take time to really see how big an acre is by actually measuring it and visualizing it.
The procedure we use is simple, but the 5 discussion items can and should lead to some lively conversation between and among students.
While the research page provides a few little know facts about an acre of land to get students thinking.
You will need to use the athletic fields for this outdoor activity.
