This lesson guides students through the process of analyzing an Easter-themed poem (An Easter Ode by Paul Laurence Dunbar), identifying and explaining the figurative language techniques used, and then constructing a short essay exploring the use of figurative language in the poem.

*Please note: It would be possible to just use the materials to study the poem and explore the use of figurative language without writing the essay (or the essay could be used for extension purposes for stronger students).

A Suggested Lesson Plan” This step-by-step lesson plan guides the teacher through a suggested plan of how to use the materials contained.

A Copy of the Poem This poem is readily available in the public domain, however this handout has been attractively designed with brief information about the poet, a glossery and space for annotation.

Analyzing the Figurative Language Worksheet: This worksheet contains a partially filled in table (to scaffold student’s understanding), to guide students through the process of identifying, naming and explaining the figurative language techniques used.

Worksheet Answer Key: This suggested answer key will help guide the teacher through the post-completion discussion of the worksheet.
