I am so excited to go deeper into close reading in my classroom. While we all know close reading has been around since the 1940s, it is fun to open up ways for students to be the scholars we know they can be. Close reading is not mysterious. It can be engaging, fun, and collaborative. In this lesson, we start together with a close reading (and listening) of a fun contemporary pop song. Next, students work with a partner to unpack one of three Beatles' songs. Finally, students make choices in expressing themselves through song lyrics. These lyrics, too, will require a close reading. I can't wait!
