Give your students the big picture before you launch into a writing unit. First, use this power point to give a brief understanding of the history of writing. How did the skill of written communication progress over time? What evidence was left behind from all around the world?
Then, complete a quick experiment that compares the skills of people today to those of people thousands of years ago. Use the given questions to prompt student discussions and reflections.
Next introduce the three types of common core writing; opinion, narrative, and informative.
Play a short fun quiz game, then end with an advanced cut and sort activity that will challenge both the 4th and 5th graders.
