This unit is one I developed for a combination 6/7/8 Social Studies class. The original lesson was designed for Canadian culture comparing Newfoundland, where I am from and Northern Alberta where I taught. I have adapted the lesson so that it can be used on the subject of culture in any part of the world.
It does require preparation by the teacher in advance of classes. For me, I used my own photographs of the local region and culture and photographs of other parts of Canada and the world that I visited. The photos included in this resource are my own.
Photos can be obtained online and in magazines that would be relative to the individual local regions.
I included sample graphic organizers for use in the classroom and explanations of how I used them in the classroom. Both formative and summative assessment formed the grade for students. As they were working in the classroom, whether in groups or class discussion, I kept notes on how well they participated and in their level of comprehension as demonstrated in the activities.
Ideas for assessment are used throughout the lessons and at the end of each section.
