This handout can be adapted or used "as is" to help students begin thinking about how the sound of dialect can be transcribed on the page. It explores ideas of regional terms, slang, and accents by comparing modern expressions and dialects to what they will encounter as they begin to read The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. I have used this as a mini-lecture, discussion starter and writing assignment that high school kids really enjoy. This can also be a springboard in presenting the use of the "n-word" throughout the novel.
