Before STAAR, I teach several thematic units with a persuasive element. My first go to is gender stereotypes, because the kids seem to engage with it very well. One thing that is always interesting to me is the fact that a lot of students don't seem to realize that gender norms are constantly changing. So to introduce this idea, I have them read an article from the Cracked.com website called "5 Gender Stereotypes That Used to be the Exact Opposite." With this article, the kids summarize, identify the main idea and counterpoint, and identify the supporting details.
