This lesson provides an introduction to rhetoric and argument suitable for any high school English class and adaptable for middle school students. Students think about arguments in their own lives and the techniques they use to argue. The “Introduction to Rhetoric” PowerPoint then introduces students to the purposes of rhetoric, context and purpose, the rhetorical triangle, and the classical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos). After applying these concepts first to a speech and then to a series of advertisements (which also introduces the concept of visual rhetoric), students apply their knowledge to a new piece for homework.
