I'm offering this lesson for free so that you can meet Backpack Jack. If you enjoy this lesson, please consider checking out some of his other adventures in my TpT store!
Each lesson in the Backpack Jack series begins by introducing (or becoming reacquainted with) Jack, a fun-loving outdoor adventurer. Students will read Jack's challenge, and work collaboratively with their classmates to come up with a solution. To add to the challenge, the only materials students may use are the odds and ends in Jack's backpack! (All materials are readily available and free or very inexpensive.)
This lesson is different from the others because it's an introductory lesson to walk students through the steps of the engineering process and familiarize them with how to brainstorm, collaborate, and design a prototype.
This lesson contains:
--detailed lesson plan covering planning, building, testing, evaluating, and improving
-- materials list
--teacher prep and directions
--8-page student booklet, guiding students through the engineering process (4 full-sized pages, printed back-to-back, folded in half)
--1 follow-up/reflection page
