The rhetorical triangle has been the basis for discourse for thousands of years for one simple reason- it works. It is the gateway for understanding literary analysis, and it is the foundation for ALL forms of communication. This short lesson (50 minutes) serves as an introduction to the terms and devices necessary to understanding the rhetorical triangle. I usually introduce these ideas on the second day of class because it is the basis for all of our work. The terms and devices are simple and straightforward, but they can be adapted for every class at every skill level. If students already know these concepts, it is a fun and easy way to review materials and make sure that all students are on the same page. Also, the simple nature of the notes allows for students who transfer in to get caught up pretty quickly.
