This document contains a brief introduction to opioids, focusing on the structure and function of a general opiate receptor. Schematic models are presented that enable students to make simple observations about the structural properties of various opioid drugs that result in markedly different functions. The pharmaceutical treatment of opioid addiction is covered via a comparison of the drugs buprenorphine (brand name: suboxone) and naloxone (brand name: narcan). A basic understanding of neurotransmission and synapse structure is a prerequisite to full understanding of these concepts. Please see the related worksheets in my store.
