This deconstruct guide helps students understand and analyse poetry in an easy step by step way on a one page handout. Students can check off each step as they go. It is designed to help students delve into more complex, middle and high school poetry analysis.
I've developed this handout over several years and have found it helped my most reluctant and struggling students to engage and analyse poetry. I've also used this guide with ESL students to help them access poems. I've structured the guide in five parts. The first part is all about reading the poem first. Then there are the four steps based on four key aspects of poetry analysis. 1) Poetic form and structure, 2) Language use and effect 3) Visual and auditory Imagery, 4) Tone, mood and reader connections.
I hope you find this useful. It is ideal for Years 8 to 12 and provides a step by step method for deconstructing poetry on just one page. You can use this guide over and over again with any unit of poetry in English or Language Arts classes.
