Help your students get the most out of the writing process! This activity will take students through reflection about and revision of one paragraph of analysis writing they have already completed. Students will make strategic choices as writers, starting with capitalizing on their strengths and planning for improvement based on their self-identified problem areas. Students will work on crafting strong topic and conclusion sentences, creating balance between detail and commentary, introducing quotations, and organizing their ideas within a paragraph.
My students frequently engage in reflection and revision about their writing, formal and informal. This activity has proven successful with 10th, 11th, and 12th graders at the regular and honors levels. It is ideal for use when you would like to pull small groups of students or when there is a substitute, as the tasks themselves are straightforward enough that students can work through them independently.
