This product is a combination of all of my essay writing materials that I have for sale.
Using these handouts, a teacher can effectively help students to break down the essay writing experience over the course of a week. Oftentimes it can be difficult for students to understand how to write an analytical essay, and they accidentally end up writing a summary instead. By following these handouts and worksheets, a student can write their analytical essay in a step by step process instead.
I use these handouts after my students have finished reading novels which follow The Hero's Journey, so many of the examples are from books that follow those themes. I spread the essay writing process out through many days:
Day 1: Thematic Analysis vs. Summary - Using this handout I have the students practice the two styles of writing. This is meant to be a practice activity to get them warmed up before they actually start writing their essay.
Day 2: Thesis Statements and Topic Sentences Guides - I pass out both of these handouts on the same day. I have them write a practice thesis statement, then I have them fill out the entire Topic Sentence Guide, then I have them move back to the Thesis Statement Guide to revise their original thesis statement.
If I have a lower section of students I will also walk them through my Transitions Guide; however, most of my sophomore level students can usually get by without this.
Day 3: The Perfect Paragraph - Once the students have three topic sentences written, I walk them through my expectations for what I want to see in high school level writing. This handout breaks the paragraph writing experience down into five easier to understand concepts.
Day 4: Introductions and Conclusions Guide - This could easily be broken down into two different days; however, I personally like to walk my students through introduction and conclusion work on the same day. Just like with the paragraphs, these handouts break the writing process down into smaller sections to help with student comprehension.
Day 5: Quotation Formatting - On the final work day, I walk my students through the process of proper quotation formatting. We talk about the right way to introduce a quote, proper punctuation, how to create an in-text citation, and how to format a works cited correctly.
Using these handouts has greatly helped my students to write analytical essays in the span of a week. I hope they are helpful to you too!
