Did you know The Hero's Journey is an ancient plot line that has been recycled again and again over the past 3000 years? (Star Wars, Harry Potter, even The Lion King are examples.) Using an abridged version of the Hero's Journey plot structure discussed in Joseph Campbell's The Hero with a Thousand Faces, students will analyze how Stephen Vincent Benet's short story "By the Waters of Babylon" relates. In this activity, students begin with large group discussion, then work individually to relate events from the short story to The Hero's Journey plot structure. Lastly, small groups can come together to create a poster illustrating the events they've chosen for the diagram. This activity includes the diagram itself, the task sheet, a rubric for grading individual work, and even photos of completed posters!
